AN EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTION IS A MINIMALLY INVASIVE PAIN TREATMENT THAT CAN HELP RELIEVE ARM, LEG, NECK, AND BACK PAIN.
Epidural Steroid Injections are safe to use on a wide variety of neck pain, back pain, and nerve pain conditions and many patients find the injection provides much-needed relief while experiencing acute pain episodes.
For some patients, an epidural steroid injection by itself reduces neck or back discomfort enough to return to everyday activities. For others, epidural steroid injections are used in combination with rehabilitation, such as physical therapy. Pain relief from an epidural steroid injection can vary from one week to one year or more.
TYPICAL BENEFITS OF EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTIONS
- Reduction of pain (primarily back and pain)
- Delay or avoidance of surgery
- Reduction in use of pain medication
- Improvement in mobility and function
- Reduction of inflammatory proteins (chemicals contributing to pain exacerbation)
THE EPIDURAL INJECTION PROCEDURE
During a steroid injection, a small needle is inserted into the epidural space with fluoroscopy, guided by an X-Ray to the exact location for maximum pain relief. After correct placement of the needle is confirmed, a corticosteroid, in combination with a local anesthetic pain medication, is injected into the needle. The corticosteroid is used to minimize swelling and inflammation in the epidural space, taking pressure off the nerves and soft tissues, providing pain relief over time. The anesthetic pain medication provides immediate relief and flushes out inflammatory proteins that may worsen pain.
CONDITIONS TREATED WITH EPIDURAL INJECTIONS
